Popular Flea Collar May Cause Injuries to Pets and People

When products become available for sale, people expect to be able to use them without being placed at risk of harm. This is especially true for products that are meant to treat or prevent health issues, such as pet products that prevent infestations by pests. Unfortunately, many different types of products are found to be defective or dangerous, and people or their pets may suffer injuries when using these items. Recently, concerns have been raised about a type of flea collar that has been linked to thousands of cases involving injuries to both pets and their owners. Those who have been injured by these types of products will want to understand their options for pursuing a product liability claim against a negligent manufacturer.

Seresto Flea Collars May Have Harmed Thousands

Flea and tick collars work by releasing pesticide chemicals that kill insects on a dog’s or cat’s body. While all pesticides have some risks, products that use these chemicals should be fully tested to ensure that they are safe for animals to wear and that they do not cause harm to children or adults.

Currently, Seresto flea and tick collars, which were developed and manufactured by the company Bayer and are sold by the company Elanco, are the top-selling flea collar on Amazon, and they are also popular in many pet stores. However, since these collars were first introduced in 2012, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has received more than 75,000 reports that they have caused people or animals to suffer harm. Of these reports, more than 1,500 involved the death of a pet and nearly 1,000 involved injuries to people.

Seresto collars contain two types of pesticides: imidacloprid and flumethrin. While imidacloprid is used in other pesticide products, flumethrin is only used in Seresto flea collars. While the combination of these two chemicals has been found to be effective for killing fleas and ticks, it may also cause harm to pets and humans. Some dogs or cats have suffered symptoms such as rashes, hair loss, or lethargy, and in more serious cases, animals have experienced seizures, stopped breathing, and died. Symptoms reported by people who came in contact with the collars include skin irritation, hives, headaches, fatigue, vomiting, seizures, and heart arrhythmia.
