U.K Royal Faces Car Accident Lawsuit, Proving No One is Above a Negligence Claim
Car accidents are a common occurrence in Illinois, particularly in and around major cities. Just about everyone drives or rides in a vehicle on a regular basis and most people have been involved in car accidents. Americans are fascinated with the British royal family, and many citizens were recently shocked to learn that, yes, even royals get into car accidents.
A royal car accident injury lawsuit?
Earlier this year, Prince Philip, the husband of the Queen of England, was involved in a serious car crash near the Queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk. The incident happened when the 97-year-olds Land Rover slammed into a vehicle carrying two women, aged 28 and 45, as well as a nine-month-old baby. The prince’s vehicle flipped onto its side. Though he will not face any charges, Prince Philip could be facing a car accident lawsuit.
The prince was uninjured in the incident, despite not wearing a seatbelt. The 28-year-old woman suffered cuts to her knees, and the 45-year-old woman sustained a broken wrist. The baby was not hurt in the crash.
Emma Fairweather, the 45-year-old, said a week after the crash that she would likely miss months of work due to her broken wrist. She revealed that she was considering legal action to recover compensation.
“I think he should be treated the same as anyone else. How could you say no to prosecuting him if he’s broken the law?”
While this incident happened overseas, we know that vehicle accidents are common here in Illinois as well. One common theme in our laws is that at-fault drivers should be held accountable for their actions, both criminally and civilly, if necessary.
What can happen?
The Illinois Department of Transportation tells us that there were 311,679 total motor vehicle crashes in the state during the latest reporting year. Out of those, nearly 67,000 of the incidents caused injuries to drivers or passengers.
It if not uncommon for car accidents to cause injuries, both minor and severe. Even minor injuries can lead to major medical expenses for victims. Consider our Emma Fairweather from the story above. Her broken wrist likely led to medical bills reaching into the thousands of dollars. We also have to consider how much income she lost due to missing work.
In Illinois, it is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries in the aftermath of a crash:
- Spinal cord injuries
- Whiplash injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Concussions
- Broken and dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations
- Internal organ damage
- Internal bleeding
Many of those injuries result in massive medical expenses and long recovery periods for victims. When another driver is at fault for the crash, then that driver should be held accountable. In many cases, it may be necessary to file a car accident injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver if their insurance coverage is not sufficient to cover all of your injury and property damage expenses.
